ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING

COURSE OVERVIEW & LEARNING OUTCOMES

The electrical engineering course complements the instrumentation and control systems course curriculum to train and improve understanding of the basics and practice of electrical engineering in oil and gas facility operations.  Its main focus is the safe and efficient management (generation, distribution, control and protection) of electrical power for oil and gas operations. The training is delivered with the facilities engineer in mind.   It starts with a refresher on the principles of electrical engineering, standards, abbreviation and symbols used, and cuts through the jargons and basic configurations to promote better communication amongst the disciplines. It then hones in on the power equipment encountered in oil and gas facilities.

  • Renewed awareness in electrical engineering fundamental concepts

  • Understand the terminologies, symbols and jargons used in oil field electrical systems

  • Gain practical knowledge about electrical power generation, distribution and control and its components

  • Infield power generation – main supply, standby, peak and co-generation.

  • Motors, AC and DCs, and their differences.

  • The purpose and sizing of backup power; generators, UPS – purpose, and sizing

  • Transformers, voltage ratios, efficiency, rating, losses etc.

  • Safety in handling and protection of electrical equipment, shock protection, grounding and bounding systems, circuit breakers fuses etc.

  • The purposes and sizing criteria for backup power, including generators and UPS power systems

  • The considerations and sizing criteria for on-site power generation, which includes standby, prime, peak, and co-generation

  • Basic System installation troubleshooting and maintenance

  • Interpret P&ID symbols and instrument tags, loop and logic diagrams etc.
